Bears Continue Strong Run To Open Cal Winter Invite

Jan 14, 2022
Cal freshman Jessica Alsola won in straight sets in singles and (with Erin Richardson) was dominant in doubles on Friday.

BERKELEY – The California women's tennis team opened its Cal Winter Invitational in fine fashion, capturing 12 of 13 matches on Friday at the Hellman Tennis Complex and the Channing Tennis Courts.

Eight Golden Bears won in singles against Cal Poly players, and all four of Cal's doubles teams prevailed in matches vs. Saint Mary's duos. Seven Bears won in straight sets in singles, including the 108th-ranked Valentina Ivanov – a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Cal Poly's Laura Bente – the 110th-ranked Jessica Alsola – who defeated the Mustangs' Emily Ackerman, 6-2, 6-2, and senior Julia Rosenqvist, who knocked off Cal Poly's Melissa LaMette, 6-1, 6-1.

The 27th-ranked pair of Richardson and Alsola topped the Gaels' Jocelyn Massey and Olivia Rook, 8-2, as the Bears – who didn't lose in doubles in last week's Weinman Foundation Invitational – continued to look strong in doubles.

Cal freshman Katja Wiersholm won both her first singles and first doubles matches at Hellman. She beat Cal Poly's Delanie Dunkle, 6-3, 6-2, and teamed with the veteran Rosenqvist to best the Saint Mary's pair of Jordan Harris and Lene Mari Hovda, 8-6.

Friday's matches started about an hour and a half late, with the outdoor courts at Hellman and Channing wet due to early morning fog.

"First off I'd like to acknowledge the facilities crew," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "We had a tough weather morning, and they were able to get us going. It's always a little bit of a challenge this time of year, but they do such an amazing job. I'm really appreciative of them getting us going. And it's nice to play again on our own courts.

"Once we got going, I thought the team did a really good job of being ready to go. We came out really strong in the singles, and that momentum rolled into doubles."

The Cal Winter Invitational will resume action on Saturday at 11 a.m. – one hour later than originally scheduled – at the Hellman Tennis Complex and the Channing Tennis Courts.

"This event's great because it's one more tournament where most everyone gets to compete," Augustus added, "and it helps the coaching staff figure out what we want things to look like in our first dual matches next week."
