Cats Tee Off a New Year at Copper Cup
MARICOPA, Ariz. – Arizona Men's Golf will participate in the second annual Copper Cup versus Arizona State in its first official action of 2022. The event, created as a partnership between the two programs in 2021, follows a Ryder Cup-style format based on match play. The two-day event tees off at 8 a.m. (MST) on Sunday, Jan. 16 at AK Chin Southern Dunes Golf Course and is open to the public to attend free of charge.
"This is an exciting way to kick off the new year as our team looks to carry its momentum from a great Fall into this year," said head coach Jim Anderson. "This event is a high-level competition that really prepares and challenges our team in a different way. This year will prove to be another great event with a top-notch college golf atmosphere, and I hope Arizona fans and alums fill the galleries on Sunday and Monday."
The Wildcat lineup for the event will begin with eight golfers "Four Ball" matches on Sunday morning before singles matches in the afternoon. Arizona will be represented on the first day of action by Chaz Aurilia, Christian Banke, Santeri Lehesmaa, Cal McCoy, Jackson Norwich, Chase Sienkiewicz, Sam Sommerhauser and Johnny Walker with four of the Wildcats having participated in last year's inaugural event.
Arizona, the defending Pac-12 Champions, participated in four tournaments last semester with two of them being nationally televised on the Golf Channel. Its best finishes were second at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational and third at the Stevens Cup.
