Strunk Wins Weight Throw at Cougar Classic

Jan 14, 2022

SPOKANE, Wash. – Powered by a career-best showing, Mason Strunk opened the indoor season with a victory in the weight throw Friday night at the Cougar Classic in Spokane. Strunk led a 1-3 finish for the UO men with teammate Travis Brewster Jr. who turned in a personal best of his own.

The invitational section of the season-opening meet continues Saturday at The Podium with field events beginning at 10 a.m., followed by running events starting at 12 p.m. The Cougar Classic will be streamed live on RunnerSpace.

On his final attempt of the night, Strunk got the weight out to a mark of 20.06m/65-9.75 to cement his position on top of the standings. With that throw, Strunk became the fourth man in program history to eclipse the 20-meter mark and the first to do so since Greg Skipper established the current school mark of 22.55m/73-11.75 in 2016.

Strunk entered the meet with a previous best of 19.94m/65-5 from last year's Razorback Invitational. He already owned the No. 4 spot on the program's top-10 list but strengthened his hold with Friday's effort.

Brewster surpassed his previous PR with a heave of 18.04m/59-2.25 in the fifth round, the first 18-meter mark of his career. He added a second—18.01m/59-1.25—on his final attempt of the evening. Brewster came into the weekend with a best of 17.74m/58-2.5 from a season ago.

Competing in his first of three scheduled events this weekend, multis standout Jett Kinder finished the night with a 1.90m/6-2.75 clearance. He went on to take three attempts at the next height (1.95m) that would have tied his personal best. The Brentwood, Tenn., native is also entered in 60-meter hurdles and the pole vault, both of which will be contested Saturday.

The Ducks' next meet is scheduled for Jan. 28-29, the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
