Record-Setting Debut

Jan 15, 2022

SEATTLE – In his collegiate debut, Stanford freshman Udodi Onwuzurike broke the school record in the men's 60 meters to win the UW Indoor Preview as the Cardinal opened the indoor track and field season Saturday.

Onwuzurike, the reigning world under-20 outdoor 200-meter champion from West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, clocked 6.67 seconds in the final to break the mark of 6.71 set by Isaiah Brandt-Sims in 2019.

In his first collegiate race, in the 60 prelims, Onwuzurike ran 6.78, breaking teammate Dorien Simon's Stanford frosh record of 6.80 set in 2020. In the final, Onwuzurike easily beat the runner-up in the first of the two sections, Greggmar Swift, a 2012 Olympic hurdler from Barbados, who ran 6.85. In the second section, Simon was second, though his time of 6.84 placed him third overall in the two combined sections.

Onwuzurike and Simon joined Andrew Franco and Marcus Floyd in giving Stanford the victory in the 4x400 relay, in 3:22.07 on the 307-meter flat track. Overall, Stanford earned six victories in the meet, four by the men and two by the women at the University of Washington's Dempsey Indoor facility.

Also making strong debuts were Stanford freshmen Tess Stapleton and Maya Valmon, who earned victories in the women's long jump and women's 200, respectively.

Stapleton was third in the women's 60 hurdles in 8.68, placing her No. 8 on Stanford's all-time indoor list and No. 4 on the school freshman list. Stapleton also won the long jump in 18-9 ¾ (5.73 meters).

Valmon won the 200 in 24.96, was second in the 400 in 55.55, and ran the third leg on the second-place 4x400 relay team.

Overall, Stanford competitors set 20 personal bests – 14 by the men and six by the women.

There were six additions or improvements to the Stanford top-10 list. Besides two apiece for Onwuzurike and Stapleton (who reached the top 10 in prelims and improved their times in the finals), Keyshawn King moved to No. 7 all-time with his 49-5 (15.06m) in placing second in the men's triple jump, and Devin Hart ran 7:51.85 to place sixth in the 3,000 while moving in at No. 10 all-time.

There also were four additions and improvements to the Stanford freshmen top-five lists – again two each by Onwuzurike and Stapleton.
Stanford victories came from Onwuzurike (men's 60), Andrew Franco (men's 200), the men's 4x400 relay team, Max Manson (men's pole vault), Valmon (women's 200), and Stapleton (women's long jump).
