Women’s Tennis Opens Season With Two Wins

SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's tennis earned two victories on Saturday afternoon at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center. The Utes earned two 7-0 wins over Dixie State. 
 
"This was a very productive first day of dual match competition for us," remarked head coach Ric Mortera. "We gained a lot of valuable information and will have some clear objectives for training this coming week. Overall, I think everyone had a lot of positives to take from today, and we will continue building for our next slate of matches in a week."
 
Utah 7, Dixie State 0
Opening the season, the Utes came out strong in doubles action as they took all three matches. Anastasia Goncharova and Emily Dush made quick work of their match against the Trailblazers. Goncharova and Dush came away with a 6-1 victory. The doubles point was clinched with a win in No. 3 doubles. Lindsay Hung and Katya Hersh earned a 6-2 victory. Linda Huang and Madison Tattini won the third match, 7-5. 
 
The winning ways continued as Madeline Lamoreaux won 6-0, 6-0 in No. 5 singles. Hung made it 3-0 in favor of the Utes with a 6-0 6-0 victory. The Utes clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win in No. 2 singles by Emily Dush. The final three matches went in favor of Utah, as Tattini won 6-0, 6-2, Huang came away with a 6-1, 6-1 victory, and Goncharova finished the match with a 6-0, 6-3 win. 
 
Utah 7, Dixie State 0
The Utes continued to dominate in the second match of the day. Again, Utah came out and took the doubles point. Hung and Hersh won 6-1. The point was clinched with a 6-4 win by Goncharova and Dush. Tattini and Huang won their second match of the day with a 7-5 victory. 
 
The match improved to 2-0 in favor of the Utes after Hung won No. 3 singles. She won the first set 6-1 and was leading 3-0 before the Trailblazer would retire. Improving to 3-0 in favor of the Utes, Huang came away with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Utah clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory as Dush came away with a win in No. 2 singles. 
 
Utah continued to earn wins as Goncharova won her second match of the day. She won 6-2, 6-0 over Ya-Chi Hsu. The Utes picked up wins in No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 victory by Madeline Lamoreaux and sixth singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win by Katya Hersh. 
 
UP NEXT 
 Utah will host the Montana Grizzlies and the Seattle U Redhawks at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center on Saturday, Jan. 22. The Utes open play on Jan. 22 against Montana at 10 a.m. MT before closing the day at 4 p.m. against Seattle U.
