LAS VEGAS -- The UCLA women's tennis team rang in 2022 at the Freeman Memorial Championships, as four Bruins were in action for the final time before the start of dual matches. Opponents from Florida, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, Stanford and host UNLV also took part in the singles and doubles draws. All three days of matches were played at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

Elysia Bolton played her first counting matches of the 2021-22 season. She was joined in action by Ava Catanzarite, Sasha Vagramov and Elise Wagle. Bolton advanced to the singles quarterfinal round, while the combination of Bolton and Wagle reached the doubles semifinals. Each player logged at least one win.

Each of the three participating singles players – Bolton, Vagramov and Wagle – advanced out of the first round. No. 49 Vagramov took down Bente Spee of Florida, 6-2 6-1, Bolton bested Angelica Blake of Stanford, 6-2, 6-2, and Wagle advanced past UNLV's Izumi Asano by default. Vagramov and Wagle were felled in the round of 16 by ranked foes, No. 86 Mananchaya Sawangkaew of Oklahoma State and No. 10 Lisa Zaar of Pepperdine. Bolton got past 34th-ranked Marlee Zein of Florida, 6-4, 6-4, before coming up short against No. 31 Shiori Fukuda, who ultimately beat Sawangkaew in the final. Wagle would turn in a dominant performance versus UNLV's Molly Helgesson, 6-2, 6-0, in an added match, while Vagramov dropped a pair.

Bolton and Wagle knocked off the Florida pair of McCartney Kessler and Emma Shelton, 6-2, to start doubles play, setting up a showdown with the 11th-ranked tandem of Pepperdine's Zaar and Victoria Flores. Bolton and Wagle were not fazed by the tournament's top seed, taking down the Waves by a 6-3 score. The Bruins were unable to get past their second ranked counterpart, however, as they were outlasted by the eventual champion, the 46th-ranked team of Florida's Spee and Alicia Dudeney.

Catanzarite and Vagramov continued a partnership that began at the Women of Troy Invitational in October 2021. They left with a 6-1 victory in an added match against Aura Fang and Cindy Hu of UNLV. Catanzarite and Vagramov were defeated by a second UNLV pair in the main draw and edged in a tiebreaker by two Oklahoma State players in an added match.

UCLA opens the dual-match season Jan. 21, when it welcomes Loyola Marymount to Los Angeles Tennis Center. First serve is set for 1:30 p.m. PT.
