Men's Golf: Copper Cup Day One Summary

(Note: The Copper Cup takes place all day Sunday and Monday (Jan. 16-17) at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes. Below are details on each match as they are completed on Sunday. Admission is free)

The University of Arizona men's golf team took a 7-to-5 lead after the first day of the 2022 Copper Cup held at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Sunday with four wins in afternoon singles.

Foursomes in the morning resulted in each team notching two points, while Arizona won the afternoon singles 4-2-2.

Arizona State won the first Copper Cup in dramatic fashion in 2021, 12.5-to-11.5, with late single wins on the second day. Arizona will need 12.5 to claim the Cup, while a tie will result in the Sun Devils keeping it for another season.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON (JAN. 16) SINGLES
MASON ANDERSEN (ASU) DEF. CHRISTIAN BANKE (UA), 1-UP
Andersen won the final two holes, including a birdie on 18, after trailing by one from No. 13-16.

JOHNNY WALKER (UA) DEF. JAMES LEOW (ASU), 1-UP
Leow led by two through No. 14, but Walker won the next three holes and clinched the win with both players getting par on the final hole.

CHAZ AURILIA (UA) DEF. DAVID PUIG (ASU), 2-UP
The match was tied through 14, but Aurilia won holes 15 and 18 to earn the win.

SANTERI LEHESMAA (UA) DEF. JOSE BALLESTER (ASU), 1-UP
The match was tied through 15, but Lehesmaa won holes 16 and 18 to earn the point.

PRESTON SUMMERHAYS (ASU) DEF. CAL McCOY (UA), 2 & 1
Summerhays took a 3-hole lead through No. 5 and never let it get tied for the 2 & 1

SAM SOMMERHUASER (UA) VS. RYGGS JOHNSTON (ASU), TIE
Johnston won No. 18 to earn the tie as Sommerhauser led by two from No. 6 through No. 11. Johnston won No. 12 and No. 13 but lost a point at No. 15.

JEE WON PARK (ASU) VS. 
JACKSON NORWICH (UA), TIE

Jee Won Park fell behind after two holes, then won holes 3-5 and No. 7 to take a three-hole lead. Norwich won No. 18 to force the tie.

CHASE SIENKIEWICZ (UA) DEF. CAMERON SISK (ASU), 2 & 1
The match was tied through three holes, but Sienkiewicz won the fourth hole and never let it get tied.

SUNDAY MORNING (JAN. 16) FOURBALL
CAL McCOY/CHRISTIAN BANKE (UA) DEF. MASON ANDERSEN/JOSE BALLESTER (ASU), 1-UP
Arizona won the first hole and went up four through 10 before ASU cut it to one through 15, but the Sun Devils could not win any of the last three holes.

RYGGS JOHNSTON/JAMES LEOW (ASU) DEF. JOHNNY WALKER/CHAZ AURILIA (UA), 5-UP
Sun Devils Ryggs Johnston and James Leow grabbed control early winning three holes in first 10 and then cruising to the five-hole win, allowing just one Wildcat win in 15 holes. It was the first score counted on the day.

CAMERON SISK/DAVID PUIG (ASU) DEF. SAM SOMMERHUASER/SANTERI LEHESMAA (UA), 3-UP
ASU won the first three holes and went up four holes through five, but Arizona cut the lead to two until ASU won hole 16 to put the match away.
 


CHASE SIENKIEWICZ/JACKSON NORWICH (UA) DEF. PRESTON SUMMERHAYS/GABE SALVANERA (ASU), 5-UP
Arizona won No. 3, No. 4, No. 7, No. 9, No. 10 and never lost a hole en route to the 14-hole win.
