Cal Falls At Tulane 4-3
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Cal men's tennis battled to another 4-3 result on the road on Monday, but this time the Golden Bears fell to Tulane to even their record at 1-1.
The Green Wave clinched its win when Rafael De Alba defeated Cal freshman Derrick Chen, 6-7, 7-6, 6-2.
Tulane won on court two and then on court three to take the doubles point. Cal's Yuta Kikuchi and Carl Emil Overbeck were leading their opponents, 5-4, on court one when the Green Wave clinched.
In singles, Cal got wins from Kikuchi – he beat Billy Suarez, 6-1, 6-1 – Lucas Magnaudet, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Luka Petrovic, and then Sean Hill, who knocked off Alex Bancila, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, to tie the overall match at 3-3, until the three-setter on court five decided matters.
"I'm proud of our group of guys, of how they handled the match and represented Cal today," said Kris Kwinta, the Peter Wright Director of Men's Tennis. "Nothing but applause for them. I'm proud to be part of a group that puts everything on the line. Unfortunately, we didn't get the win today, but it's a great experience to learn from."
Cal next plays its home opener on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., when the Bears host Saint Mary's at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
