Huskies Handle Broncos In Season-Opening Victory

Jan 17, 2022

SEATTLE – Third time was the charm for the Husky men's tennis team, which finally got its 2022 dual season going after two prior postponements. Washington defeated Boise State this afternoon at the Nordstrom Tennis Center, with senior Jack Davis providing the clinching point at No. 2 singles.

The Huskies improve to 1-0 on the season and got the win even without top returner, third-ranked Clement Chidekh. The Broncos (1-2) challenged the Huskies with a tight doubles point win to take the 1-0 lead, but the Dawgs had three dominant singles wins from Han-Chih Lin, Ewen Lumsden, and Nedim Suko, before Davis got the fourth point at No. 2 singles.

"I'm grateful we got to play, we had two matches postponed and we're thrilled to be out there. I think we've got a lot of potential this year and I want to just keep building," said Head Coach Matt Anger. "I feel like we were a little up and down but we are happy that we were more up. It's always good to get a match under your belt, as everyone says in every sport. There were things we did well but things for sure we can do better."

Lin gave up just one game at the No. 3 spot to Michael Bott, winning 6-0, 6-1 for UW's first point. Lumsden then stepped into the No. 1 position and controlled things with Simon Arca Costas, winning 6-2, 6-2. Local freshman Nedim Suko, from Kirkland, got his first dual win, 6-1, 6-1 over Caden Moortgat at No. 4 singles.

Davis pulled out a very tight first set in a 9-7 tiebreak at No. 2 singles against Pedro Liborio, and then pulled away for a 6-2 second set win for the clincher. Freshman Rikuto Yamaguchi then collected his first dual win at No. 5, as he took a super-tiebreak third set by a 10-7 count. Boise State's only singles point came at No. 6, where Jack Pulliam came up just shy in a 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 loss to Jan Luca Marquardt.

Washington will be back in action two days from now when the rescheduled dual with Seattle U. takes place on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the Nordstrom.
