No. 2 Utah Gymnastics Opens Pac-12 Play Against No. 13 Arizona State

No. 2 Utah Gymnastics will host No. 13 Arizona State this Friday, Jan. 21, at the Jon M. Huntsman Center to open Pac-12 play. The Utes and Sun Devils will square off at 7 p.m. MT in Salt Lake City with introductions set to begin at 6:45 p.m. MT. The meet will be televised on the Pac-12 Network with Jim Watson and JaNay Honest commentating the competition. Fans can also listen to the meet live on Utah's flagship radio ESPN 700.  
This week's meet will be themed "Dancing through the Decades". There will be Red Rocks bracelets given away, as well as free face tattoos for fans. There will also be trading cards featuring three of the Red Rocks available in the concourse. Introductions will begin at 6:45 p.m. MT. There will be a Kids Zone between portals 12 and 13, which will include a face painter, photo opportunities with life-sized cutouts, and more.  Friday night's meet will also be the Pac-12 Zero Waste meet and fans are encouraged to bring their own water bottles.  The University of Utah has issued a campus mask order consistent with the Salt Lake County's mandatory mask mandate that went into effect on Jan. 8, which requires all fans in attendance to wear a mask in the Huntsman Center. 
Following the nation's second-best score of the season this weekend, Utah moved to No. 2 in the nation through two weeks of competition. It is the first time Utah has been ranked second in the country since Feb. 5, 2018. The Utes are ranked No. 1 on beam, No. 3 on vault and floor, and No. 6 on bars. Individually, Grace McCallum is tied for No. 8 on vault, No. 9 on beam, No. 14 on floor, and No. 19 in the all-around. Cristal Isa is tied for seventh on beam, Maile O'Keefe is tied for No. 16 on bars and No. 23 on beam, while Cammy Hall is tied for No. 18 and Jaedyn Rucker is tied for No. 20 in the nation on vault for Utah.

• Utah's 197.775 against Oklahoma was the highest home-opening score in program history.
• Utah posted a 49.450 on vault last week, which is the second-highest score in the nation to this point. The Utes only scored higher than a 49.450 once last season on the apparatus.
• Utah's 49.475 on beam against Oklahoma is the second-best beam score in the country this season.
• Grace McCallum is one of five gymnasts in the NCAA to score a 9.975 or better on floor this season.
• Utah is 482-27 all-time at home, which includes a 40-1 mark while Tom Farden has been head coach of the Utes.

• Grace McCallum posted a 39.675 in the all-around, which is tied for the highest score in the nation this year with Stanford's Kyla Bryant (Sr.) and Michigan's Natalie Wojcik (Sr.).
• Lucy Stanhope posted a career-high 9.925 on vault to lead the rotation against Oklahoma.
• Sage Thompson earned her first career victory in just her second meet as a Ute after posting a 9.925 to win the bars title.
• Utah has hit 46-48 routines this season. Gymnasts who have hit every routine are Maile O'Keefe (5-5), Cristal Isa (4-4), Amelie Morgan (4-4), Jaedyn Rucker (4-4), Lucy Stanhope (4-4), Alexia Burch (2-2), Kara Eaker (2-2), Cammy Hall (2-2), Jillian Hoffman (2-2), Sydney Soloski (2-2), Sage Thompson (2-2), and Adrienne Randall (1-1).
• Individual event winners this season are McCallum (3), Isa (2), O'Keefe (1), Rucker (1), and Thompson (1).
• Pac-12 weekly award winners this season are Isa (Gymnast of the Week, Jan. 11), Rucker (Specialist of the Week, Jan. 11), Morgan (Freshman of the Week, Jan. 11), and Hoffman (Coaches Choice, Jan. 11).

Utah leads the all-time series with Arizona State 82-16-1, which includes a 37-2 mark in Salt Lake City. The Red Rocks have won the last 31 meetings dating back to the 2003 season. Last year, Utah and Arizona State met four times with the Utes coming ahead in each outing. Utah took the regular season matchup in Tempe that came down to the final rotation, 197.450-197.150, before besting the Sun Devils at the Pac-12 Championships 197.725-196.375. At the NCAA Regionals, Utah finished first in the second round with a 197.500, while ASU recorded a 196.600 to finish second and continue on in the postseason. In the regional final, Utah took the win 197.925-197.600.

Notes:  Arizona State recorded its best finish since 2006 last year after finishing No. 9 in the country … The Sun Devils welcome back 15 gymnasts from last year, led by all-arounder Hannah Scharf … Scharf won seven all-around titles last year and earned second-team NCAA All-American honors on bars and regular season All-American honors in the all-around … ASU scored a 196.275 in the season opener against Michigan, which is the highest season-opening score in program history ... ASU is ranked No. 8 on bars, No. 11 on vault, No. 15 on beam and No. 18 on floor.

Utah will continue Pac-12 play at home next Saturday, Jan. 29 against Stanford. The Utes and Cardinal will compete at 2 p.m. MT in the Jon M. Huntsman Center for the annual 'Character Day' meet. The competition will be live streamed.
