Dawgs Sharpen Up In Second Win

Jan 19, 2022

SEATTLE – Two days after their season-opening win, the Husky men's tennis team was back on the court and put together its first sweep of the year in a 7-0 win over Seattle U. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Head Coach Matt Anger was pleased with the sharper play from the Dawgs after they shook off some rust in the opener.
"I think our guys were a little sharper than Saturday, and you could tell that was (Seattle's) first match," said Head Coach Matt Anger. "All of a sudden we jumped on things quickly, so I was happy to see that for us, but I know what they're going through as far as first matches and getting started. We get to play again in three days and hopefully we can take another step."
The Dawgs did not drop a set in singles or doubles today in improving to 2-0.
Third-ranked junior Clement Chidekh was back in the lineup today after missing the opener, and he had a 6-2, 6-2 win over Veselin Kiselkov at the No. 1 position. Jack Davis was a 6-3, 6-0 winner at No. 2 singles over Filip Stipic. Ewen Lumsden's 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Michael Frank was the final match, wrapping up the sweep.
The clinching point came from Han-Chih Lin at fourth singles, as he won 6-0, 6-2 over Mats Krause. Freshmen Nedim Suko and Rikuto Yamaguchi got wins at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Suko was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Lars Schmassmann and Yamaguchi beat Oliver Hall, 6-1, 6-1.
The Huskies made quick work of the doubles point, with three matching 6-1 wins. Davis and Lin beat Frank/Krause at the top spot. Chidekh and Suko teamed up for the No. 2 win over Harrison/Stipic. Lumsden and Yamaguchi were the winners at No. 3 over Hall/Givens-Jensen.
The Huskies will now head for their first road match this coming Saturday, Jan. 22, as they scheduled a road match at Eastern Washington to replace a postponed home Oregon dual. The Huskies and Redhawks will have a rematch next Tuesday back on the same courts.
