Pac-12 Women's Gymnastics Weekly Release - Jan. 20, 2022

SAN FRANCISCO - The conference schedule is set to begin as Pac-12 women's gymnastics heads into its third weekend.

  • Six Pac-12 squads are in the top 25 as No. 2 Utah (197.438), the conference's preseason favorite, is followed by No. 11 California (196.325), No. 13 Arizona State (196.275), No. 13 Stanford (196.275), No. 19 Oregon State (195.550), No. 20 Arizona (195.500).
  • At 6:00 p.m. PT on Friday, No. 2 Utah will host No. 13 Arizona State in a televised matchup on Pac-12 Network and Pac-12 Mountain. After posting the nation's second-best score of the season this past weekend against Oklahoma, Utah has climbed its way to No. 2 in the rankings for the first time since 2018.
  • The Sun Devils put together their highest season-opening team score in program history (196.275) at No. 1 Michigan last Saturday, and will be facing the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in back-to-back meets for the first time is program history. Utah leads the all-time series between the two schools 82-16-1 (37-2 in Salt Lake City) and swept the Sun Devils in their four meetings last season.  
  • On Saturday,  No. 11 California will visit Washington (1 p.m. PT) at Alaska Airlines Arena, which is set to air on Pac-12 Network, Pac-12 Bay Area and Pac-12 Washington. 
  • Later the evening, No. 20 Arizona will host a quad-meet with No. 13 Stanford, No. 4 Oklahoma and No. 22 Utah State at 4 p.m. PT (Arizona Live Stream). 
  • To finish the weekend, UCLA heads to Gill Coliseum to take on No. 19 Oregon State on Sunday (2 p.m. PT) for the Beavers' annual "Dam Worth It" meet. The Bruins leads the all-time series 91-28-1 and won last season in Los Angeles, 197.025-196.500. OSU looks to claim its first victory in the head-to-head matchup since 2013 when the Beavers posted a 196.725 score in Corvallis. 
  • Currently, 21 meets are set for broadcast on Pac-12 Networks this season, including the 2022 Pac-12 Women's Gymnastics Championships, while another two are slated to air nationally on ESPN. 
  • All eight Pac-12 programs began the season in the 2022 WCGA Preseason Coaches Poll in No. 4 Utah, No. 7 California, No. 8 UCLA, No. 12 Arizona State, No. 17 Oregon State, No. 27 Arizona, No. 33 Stanford and No. 34 Washington. 
  • Utah, UCLA and California went 1-2-3 in the Pac-12 preseason coaches poll, while Arizona State, Oregon State, Arizona, Stanford and Washington rounded out the league poll.

Olympians Made Here

  • The 2022 Pac-12 gymnastics season will feature a strong connection to the recently-concluded 2020 Tokyo Olympics, with four Olympic medalists beginning their collegiate careers on Pac-12 campuses this year. Oregon State's Jade Carey (USA) won an individual gold medal in the floor exercise, UCLA's Jordan Chiles and Utah's Grace McCallum were silver medalists in the team competition with the United States, and Utah's Amelie Morgan helped Great Britain to team bronze, its first gymnastics medal since 1928.
  • Rounding out the Pac-12 freshmen with Olympic ties are UCLA's Brooklyn Moors, who competed for Canada in Tokyo, and Utah's Kara Eaker and UCLA's Emma Malabuyo, who were alternates for the United States.
