Cal Races Past Arizona, 153-92

BERKELEY – Swimming its first dual meet of the new year, Cal raced past Arizona at Spieker Aquatics Complex, 153-92, with the Golden Bears winning 11 of 14 races.
 
Senior Isabel Ivey paced Cal with three individual victories – 100 back (53.41), 50 free (22.79) and 200 individual medley (2:00.73) – in addition to leading off the winning 200 medley relay.
 
Three Golden Bear freshmen also got their hands to the wall first, starting with Fanni Fabian in the 1000 free, who posted a time of 10:07.01, which was more than nine seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Lizzy Cook was next with her triumph in the 200 free (1:49.03), as she led a 1-2-3-4 Cal finish in the race. Leah Polonsky also prevailed in the 200 breast in 2:13.40.
 
Other Bears to earn first-place status were Elise Garcia in the 100 free (50.14), Isabel Stadden in the 200 back (1:56.61) and Mia Motekaitis in the 500 free (4:55.21). Cal closed out the meet with a three-second win in the 400 free relay when the foursome of Ayla Spitz, Garcia, Cook and Ema Rajic touched in 3:22.70.
 
Cal is back in action on Saturday when the Bears host Arizona State at 12 noon. Admission is free for those in attendance, and the dual will also be streamed live through CalBears.com.
