Jan 22, 2022

TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil water polo dropped their third game in the ASU Cross-Conference challenge, 17-7 against No. 5 California after the Golden Bears started strong from the jump.

Freshman attacker Bianca Becerra scored her first goal in the maroon and gold today with 4:16 remaining in the third quarter after taking just two shots in yesterday's competition. She was one of six Sun Devil scorers on the scoresheet this morning.

"There are some really good things we're seeing and some really good opportunities," Head Coach Todd Clapper commented. "I think these games are really starting to get us to play a little bit better together and we're hoping for that to continue," with the Sun Devils wrapping up the Cross Conference Challenge tomorrow.

The Sun Devils went with a lineup that was different from yesterday's games, with Bori Kekesi and Stevilyn Griffin starting today against the Golden Bears in lieu of Lara Kiss and Bianca Becerra. This is the first meeting between ASU and Cal this season, after Chelsea Karimazondo notched 19 saves against the Golden Bears in last season's MPSF Conference Tournament meeting.

Cal recorded five goals in the first three quarters to establish their lead, but the Sun Devil defense ended the game strong allowing just two goals in the final frame.

The newcomers picked up where they left off as Emily Bennett, Vanda Baksa, and Stevilyn Griffin each tallied two points in today's loss. Luca Petovary was another Sun Devil scorer against the Golden Bears in the second quarter. She led the team in goals last season, scoring 45 goals.

UP NEXT: ASU will continue the Cross-Conference challenge tomorrow playing against Michigan at 8:30 am MST. The game will be streamed  Next week, the Sun Devils will host Jan. 29 - 30 at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center against Loyola Marymount.
