Cal Overcomes Gaels In Home Opener 5-2

Jan 22, 2022

BERKELEY - Cal men's tennis won its first home dual match in almost a year when it defeated Saint Mary's, 5-2, with Lucas Magnaudet clinching the victory on Saturday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

Magnaudet beat the Gaels' Carlos Ramos Membrives, 6-2, 6-3, at court-five singles, and Cal improved its record to 2-1 on a windy day in Berkeley. Saint Mary's dropped its season opener to start 0-1.

The match marked the first home dual match and home win for Kris Kwinta, in his first year as the Peter Wright Director of Men's Tennis.

"It's always special," Kwinta said of playing at home for the first time. "To be able to see so many familiar faces and some new people that follow the team and are passionate about this program and about these kids was really uplifting. That's what we do it for.

"To see the kids have fun on the court and compete hard like we did today, and obviously win – that helps – and just to be back on the home courts today in front of the Bear crowd is special."

Cal captured the doubles point with wins on court three – Alex Chang and Mikey Wright beat Felipe Rincon and Diego Jarry, 6-2 – and then court one – with the 15th-ranked pair of Yuta Kikuchi and Carl Emil Overbeck besting the Gaels' James Watt and Caelan Potts, 7-5. The doubles matches marked the first home matches for Cal freshmen Chang, Wright and Overbeck.

Overbeck gave the Bears a 2-0 lead in singles when he beat Jarry, 6-2, 6-1, on court four. Saint Mary's made it a 2-1 Cal advantage when Watt defeated Kikuchi, 6-2, 6-2, on court one.

Cal senior Philip Hjorth followed with a decisive 6-3, 6-0 win over Potts on court two, and then Magnaudet gave the Bears the team victory on court five.

The Bears return to action when they host UCLA - Kwinta's alma mater - on Feb. 5 and USC - the program that Kwinta spent the previous nine seasons coaching at - on Feb. 6 at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
