No. 3 UCLA Triumphs Over OUAZ, 21-1

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- No. 3 UCLA (3-0, 0-0 MPSF) thrashed OUAZ (0-4, 0-0 GSAC) on Saturday evening at the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invite at UCSB's Recreation Center. UCLA improved to 2-0 in the series history.

Redshirt senior attacker Maddie Musselman had a game-high four goals to pace the Bruins' offense. Freshman attacker Grace Myers had the first hat trick of her collegiate career against the Spirit. A total of 13 Bruins scored, including six multiple-goal scorers. Junior center Layne Anzaldo, senior attacker Val Ayala, sophomore attacker Anneliese Miller, and freshman utility Nicole Struss added two scores apiece.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Chiang got the start in the cage and registered four saves and a steal while pitching a shutout in the first half. Redshirt junior Georgia Phillips played the second half in goal and tallied six stops and a steal while allowing one power play goal.

Tori Higginson scored the lone goal for OUAZ.

PERIOD ONE
> UCLA outscored OUAZ 7-0 in the opening period, including the first 13 goals of the game.
> Musselman scored the first two goals of the game. The first was from the front court (5:50) and the second was on a power play (4:23).
> Senior center Ava Johnson made it 3-0 with a power play goal (3:22).
> Miller (2:39) and Ayala (1:57) each scored their first goals of the game on counter attacks.
> Then Musselman completed her hat trick on a counter (0:51).
> The Bruins then worked the 7-on-6 to perfection with Ayala finding the back of the net for her second score of the game (0:07) to end the scoring in the first.
 
PERIOD TWO
> The Bruins outscored the Spirit 6-0 in the second period.
> Sophomore attacker Malia Allen scored from the front court (7:37) to open the scoring in the second quarter.
> Junior attacker Fiona Kuesis made it 9-0 with a power play goal (5:33).
> Musselman posted her fourth score of the game from two meters (4:37) followed by a power play goal from junior attacker Brooke Doten (3:45) to push the lead to 11-0.
> Freshman Emma Lineback scored from the front court (2:54) and then Myers scored her first on a power play (1:10) to end the scoring in the period.
> UCLA led 13-0 at the break.
 
PERIOD THREE
> The Bruins outscored OUAZ 4-1 in the third frame.
> After a power play goal by OUAZ (6:42), Anzaldo scored her first of the game (4:25) from two meters.
> Freshman attacker Molly Renner then converted a penalty shot, drawn by Struss (2:43) to put UCLA up 15-1.
> Miller added her second goal of the game (2:06) from the front court and then Struss scored from set (0:35) as UCLA would take a 17-1 lead into the fourth quarter.

PERIOD FOUR
> UCLA outscored the Spirit 4-0 in the fourth period to provide the 21-1 final score.
> Struss would draw another penalty shot that redshirt sophomore attacker Alex Peros would convert (5:58) for her first goal of the season.
> Struss then scored back-to-back goal from the front court (3:16 and 2:37) to push the lead to 20-1.
> Anzaldo ended the scoring with her second goal of the game from two meters (0:37).

UP NEXT
The Bruins will play two more games tomorrow to complete tournament play at the UCSB Winter Invite. UCLA will open against No. 9 UC San Diego at 2:45 p.m. PT and then take on the hosts, No. 18 UC Santa Barbara at 5:45 p.m. PT.
