Jan 23, 2022

GOLD CANYON, Ariz. – Arizona Women's Golf opened the new calendar year with a 7-over par opening round at the Match in the Desert at Superstition Mountain to finish the day in sixth place. Freshman Carolina Melgrati posted the Wildcats' lowest score of the day with a 1-under round of 71, which tied the lowest round of the young Italian's collegiate career.

"I thought we played good, steady golf throughout much of our round," said head coach Laura Ianello. "We stringed together a ton of par's but struggled on a variety of par-4 holes today. We will clean up a few things and look to shoot better scores tomorrow."

Arizona's 58 pars were the most among all teams as the Cats tallied six birdies on the course's par-5 holes. Melgrati and fellow freshman Lilas Pinthier tallied a team-high four birdies apiece. Ya Chun Chang posted her team's best front nine with eight pars and a birdie. Gile Bite Starkute carded Arizona's steadiest round when she opened the day with 10 consecutive pars before ending her round with five consecutive pars.

Melgrati's opening round of 71 puts her in a tie for 12th on the leaderboards with Starkue and Chang giving the Wildcats two more players in the top 30.

The 7-over opening round by the Wildcats puts them within five strokes of Denver and nine behind Ole Miss and UCLA going into Tuesday's finale of the tournament.
