Jan 25, 2022

TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona Men's Golf's successful quest for a win at the Arizona Intercollegiate for a fifth consecutive year came down to the final golfer on the final hole on Tuesday afternoon at Tucson Country Club. Graduate senior Christian Banke sank a three-foot putt for par to clinch his individual victory and Arizona's team win. The Wildcats' 35-under par performance bested New Mexico by one stroke as Banke's tournament score of 14-under par defeated the Lobos' Sam Choi by one stroke.

Banke fired a third-round score of 66 and was propelled by three consecutive birdies on holes four, five and six on his way to a 32 on the front nine. Tuesday's final round marked a steady end to Banke's week that also included rounds of 67 and 69. Tuesday was Banke's first collegiate win and came in his 42nd career start between Arizona and San Diego State. He also gave Arizona its second consecutive individual title at the Arizona Intercollegiate following Brad Reeves' win in 2021.

The Wildcats final score of 35-under par was the sixth lowest team total in program history. It was also the second lowest team score in the history of the Arizona Intercollegiate, trailing only Arizona's 37-under performance in its win in 2019.

Junior Chase Sienkiewicz finished his round with an eagle on No. 1 to solidify Arizona's lead heading into Banke's final hole. Sienkiewicz's final round of 67 pushed him to finish tied for sixth at 9-under par, which gave him his third top-10 finish of the year.

The Wildcats will return to official tournament action on Thursday, Feb. 17 when they make their annual appearance in the John Burns Intercollegiate in Lihue, Hawai'i.
