LAST YEAR
Sophomore David Puig, playing in just his fifth collegiate stroke play tournament, easily won the 2021 Southwestern Invitational held at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village for his first collegiate victory with a tournament record nine-stroke win. Only two players shot par for the tournament, and Puig (70-66-70) won the event by nine strokes with a 10-under 206 over Pepperdine's Joshua McCarthey (72-73-70). Puig posted a tournament-best 37 pars and added 11 birdies and one eagle. Per Golfstat, Christian Cavaliers from Boston College (-16) is the last to win a tournament by nine strokes when he did it at the Wildcat Invitational in October of 2019. Puig joined the team after the 2019 fall semester and played in four tournaments before the season was canceled. He got going again in the summer of 2021 by playing well in the Palmer Cup and then coming up clutch in the 2021 Copper Cup (Jan. 17-18).
TOURNAMENT HISTORY
This is the 43rd edition of the Southwestern Invitational. The tournament began in 1978 at North Ranch Country Club with USC as the host. C.W. Johnson served as tournament director for more than 25 years. North Ranch also hosted the 1988 NCAA Championships. The Southwestern Invitational has also been known as the Southwestern Intercollegiate, the USC Collegiate Invitational, the North Ranch Intercollegiate or the Cleveland Golf Classic over the years. Pepperdine and USC co-hosted the event in 2013 and 2014, and the Waves then took over sole hosting duties beginning in 2016.
