Cougars Defeat Eastern Washington, 5-2

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State Women's Tennis team swept the doubles and captured the first three singles matches en route to a 5-2 win over Eastern Washington Saturday at the Simmelink Tennis Courts.
 
With the win, the Cougars improve to 3-0 on the season with the Eagles fall to 1-2.
 
Eastern Washington competed with only five players, resulting in No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles being forfeited to the Cougars. At No. 2 doubles, Savanna Ly-Nguyen and Elyse Tse made quick work of Renata Gabuzyan and Kenzington Mann, winning 6-0 in under 20 minutes. At No. 1, the Cougar duo of Yang Lee and Fifa Kumhom captured four of the last five games to complete a 7-5 comeback over Yasmin Mansouri and Isabella Foshee as WSU took the opening doubles point.
 
In singles play, straight-set wins at the top three spots clinched the team victory for the Cougars. Tse at No. 3 was first to finish as she defeated Gabuzyan 6-2, 6-4. Maxine Murphy at No. 2 clinched the team win as she bested Mansouri, 6-4, 6-3 while Ly-Nguyen recorded her team-leading 12th win of the season, defeating Jennifer Kida 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1.
 
The Eagles picked up their first point when Foshee completed a 6-3, 6-7 (3), 1-0 (4) victory over Kumhom at No. 4. At No. 5, Mann captured a close first set, 7-5, before WSU's Hania Abouelsaad retired, giving way to the final 5-2 score.
 
WSU plays its second match of the day when it hosts Idaho at 4 p.m.
