BERKELEY – The No. 4 Cal women's water polo team established sizable leads in each of its first two games of the Cal Cup on Saturday before cruising to victories over No. 8 Fresno State and No. 15 Pacific at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
The Bears (6-0) posted a 12-5 lead midway through the fourth quarter over the Bulldogs before settling for a 12-7 victory then followed up with an 11-5 win over the Tigers in a game in which they led 10-2 midway through the third period.
Cal was able to play almost every player on its roster in each game.
Three-time All-American and 2020 Olympian Emma Wright scored four goals to lead the Bears over Fresno State while senior Elli Protopapas added two goals and two assists. Goalie Isabel Williams made 10 saves for Cal, which led 9-5 at halftime and then scored the next three goals to take command.
Junior Cecily Turner had three goals and a steal in the win over UOP while sophomore Ruby Swadling had two goals, two steals and an assist. Sophomore Reagan Whitney also added a pair of goals for the Bears, who played much of their roster for much of the second half. Williams made 11 saves.
The Bears continue play in the Cal Cup on Sunday with games against No. 13 Long Beach State and No. 12 Cal.
