No. 4 Cal Beats Vandy To Reach Indoor Nationals

Jan 29, 2022
Julia Rosenqvist clinched the win over Vanderbilt to secure Cal's berth at ITA national indoors.

BERKELEY – Cal women's tennis senior Julia Rosenqvist clinched the fourth-ranked Golden Bears' 4-0 victory over Vanderbilt in Saturday's ITA Kickoff Weekend final, propelling Cal – and, for the first time, Rosenqvist – to the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship.
She also teamed with Erin Richardson to win in doubles against the Commodores.
Cal – which won the 2016 ITA indoor championship in Madison, Wisconsin, to mark the program's first national title – will compete in the 2022 national indoor tournament from Feb. 11-14 in Madison.
On Saturday, Rosenqvist defeated the Commodores' 119th-ranked Holly Staff, 7-6(3), 6-2, at court-four singles to end the match and improve Cal's record to 4-0. Vanderbilt is now 3-1.
"It's great because I've never reached the ITA indoors in my college career before, so it's awesome to be able to do that," Rosenqvist said of clinching.
The Bears captured the doubles point for the second consecutive day. First, Richardson and Rosenqvist defeated Anessa Lee and Dasha Kourkina, 6-1, on court three, and then Jessica Alsola and Katja Wiersholm beat Marcella Cruz and Yufei Long, 6-4, to clinch the point on court two.
Wiersholm, Alsola and Rosenqvist all won in doubles and singles on Saturday, starting with Wiersholm besting the 96th-ranked Marcella Cruz, 6-0, 6-0, at court-five singles. The 110th-ranked Alsola followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Long, before Rosenqvist completed the victory.
"We knew we were going to face a tough team today," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "This team battled us from first point to last point. I was really pleased with how we responded."
Augustus added, "I feel good. Now we can book our flights, and we'll get an indoor match in before that against Michigan, which is a very good indoor team. We're looking forward to testing ourselves to everyone else who advances."
Cal next plays at No. 14 Michigan on Feb. 8.
Earlier Saturday in the ITA Kickoff Weekend consolation match at Hellman, San Diego defeated BYU, 4-0.
