Women’s Tennis Downs Indiana; Improves to 6-0

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For just the second time since 1983-84, the Utah women's tennis team has been undefeated after five matches. The Utes are 6-0 following a 5-2 victory at Indiana on Sunday afternoon.  
 
"I am so proud of this team and their efforts today and this week overall for our first road trip," remarked head coach Ric Mortera. "We played a solid double point, and the team responded very well to Indiana, giving us a strong challenge early on in the singles on the majority of the courts. We are gaining valuable experience and are looking forward to another week of training and our next matches."
 
The Utes jumped into doubles play first. The Utes took the first doubles match after Indiana failed to field a third doubles team. Finishing second, Emily Dush and Anastasia Goncharova played and won against Hoosier team, Staiculescu, and Mejic, 6-3, gaining the doubles point.
 
Linda Huang battled it out against Indiana player Lara Schneider, who is ranked 107th in the ITA singles rankings. Huang battled and forced the first set to go to a tiebreaker. Schneider took the first set 7-6 (4). Huang tried to bounce back in set two but was defeated 6-4. 
 
Hung and Goncharova were once again were competitive on the day. Hung lost her first set against Rose Hu from Indiana, 6-0, but was able to make it up in the second as she won, 7-5. Hung clinched her win in the third set, 6-0. Hung's win clinched the match for the Utes. 
 
Goncharova had yet another strong showing this weekend against Hoosier Mila Mejic. Goncharova narrowly lost her first set 7-5 but came back to win her second, 6-4. The match was then sent into a 10-point tiebreaker, where she closed out the match, 10-6, to win. 
 
Madison Tattini also had a fantastic showing in her tough match against Sadya Hernandez. Tattini came away with the first set, 6-1 but narrowly lost her second, 6-4. Tattini defeated Hernandez in the 3rd set, 6-1.

The Utes are coming home to George S. Eccles Tennis Center to battle against Idaho State on Friday, Feb 4, at 4 pm MT.
