Arizona Sweeps UTEP and NM State

Las Cruces, N.M. - The Wildcats are off to a great start in their spring season, not dropping a single point in the first two matches. Arizona beat both UTEP and NM State 7-0 on Monday, Jan. 31.

Arizona secured the doubles point and all six singles points in both matches. 

Juniors Lexi Ryngler and Kayla Wilkins were first to step off the court in El Paso, Texas after defeating Thassane Abrahim and Veronika Lebisova 6-4. Midori Castillo-Meza and Parker Fry are a freshman pair who finalized the doubles point for the Cats when they defeated Eve Daniels and Elena Dibattista 7-5. 

The doubles smackdown did not stop there. First off the court at NM State was Ryngler and Nevenhoven who swept their opponents Gavi Kalaga and Miranda Bishard 6-2. Then came Fry and Wilkins to secure the second doubles point of the day after beating Chloe Gavino and Natsuki Nishimura 6-3. 

The Wildcats were on a roll with the singles points too. Fry was first off the court for the Cats at UTEP sweeping her opponent Laura Schmitz 6-1, 6-2. Salma Ziouti followed suit beating Lebisova 6-2, 6-1. Belen Nevenhoven snagged the last singles point against UTEP after defeating Carlotta Mencaglia in three sets 7-6, 5-7, 1-0. 

The winning streak continued on the singles courts at NM State. Ziouti grabbed the first singles point sweeping Gavino 6-1 in both sets. Nevenhoven took the second singles point in a 6-0, 6-2 blowout against Melissa Cartis. Wilkins was the last Wildcat on the court after she defeated Harsha Challa in three sets 6-7, 7-6, 10-5. 

Arizona looks to continue its winning streak at the home opener against SDSU on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022.
