Lai, Ereño Perez Lead UCLA at Day 1 of Amer Ari Invitational

KAMUELA, Hawai'i – The UCLA men's golf team sits tied for 12th at 4-under 284 after one round of action at the Amer Ari Invitational, hosted on the Hapuna Golf Course. The Bruins trail first-place No. 1 Arizona State by 16 strokes.
UCLA had a pair of 2-under 70 scores from graduate Eddy Lai and freshman Pablo Ereño Perez to lead the team on the individual leader board. Lai has now finished under par in four of his last six rounds of competition dating back to the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 22-24.
Ereño Perez's performance marked the first under-par score of his collegiate career.
Sun Devils Mason Andersen and James Leow are both tied for first place with 7-under 65 performances.
Lai birdied four times in his first 18 holes on the par-4 1st, par-4 4th, par-5 11th and par-4 17th. Ereño Perez birdied four times in his round as well with his stars coming on the par-4 6th, par-3 7th, par-3 13th and par-5 14th.
Freshman Alvaro Mueller Baumgart Lucena recorded his second even-par 72 score of the season behind three birdies on the front nine. Redshirt senior Kengo Aoshima, who is competing in both his first tournament as a Bruin and of the season, shot an even-par 72 with a team-best six birdies that were negated by three bogeys and one triple bogey on the par-4 6th.
Graduate Devon Bling finished the day with his first non-counting round of the season at 2-over 74. Bling recorded four birdies and bogeys apiece heading into hole 18 which resulted in a double bogey.
Thirty-six holes remain for the field of 19, with play set to continue at 9:30 a.m. PT.
