MVB Bounces Back with Win at No. 15 UCI

The No. 4 UCLA men's volleyball team (5-1) captured a four-set decision in a non-conference battle at No. 15 UC Irvine (3-6) on Friday night. Scores of the contest were 21-25, 25-14, 25-22, 26-24. The Bruins were led by Ido David (19) and Grant Sloane (16) who posted season high kill totals and helped UCLA generate a season-best .416 hitting percentage. Miles Partain was credited with a career-best 50 set assists. Guy Genis (6), Partain (4), Sloane (3) and Ethan Champlin (3) each met or exceeded their season-best totals for block assists in the win. The same two teams will meet in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom on Saturday at 6 p.m. in a match that will be televised on Pac-12 Network Los Angeles.
 
In set one, UCLA took leads of 9-7 and 10-8 after kills from David and then Merrick McHenry. A Genis kill made it 13-12 for the Bruins. David and Sloane had a combined nine kills to that point in the set. The Bruins moved in front 19-17 following a Champlin kill and a block by Kevin Kobrine / Genis. After an Irvine rally, a Kobrine swing knotted the score at 20-all. The 'Eaters tallied the next two points on a kill and a Bruin attack error. Back-to-back kills pushed UCI to set point. The home team's fourth ace of the set finished off the Bruins at 21-25. UCLA hit .448 for the frame and had a 17-8 edge in kills, but the Bruins could not overcome nine service errors.
 
The Bruins took advantage of five early kills by Sloane to jump to a 7-3 lead. A Champlin swing put UCLA up 11-7. Another Sloane kill left UCLA with a 15-8 edge. Sloane's eighth and ninth kills of the set upped the margin to 18-9 and then 20-11. A series of UC Irvine errors led up to a Champlin kill for set point at 25-14. UCLA hit .480 to .152 for the Anteaters.
 
A pair of David kills helped propel UCLA into a 5-2 lead to begin set three. The Bruin block then got going with key net play by Genis, Champlin and Miles Partain extending the gap to 12-8. Another David kill moved UCLA to a 15-10 advantage. UCI's block helped to rally the Anteaters in front at 17-18. A McHenry kill leveled the score at 19-all and was the beginning of a 5-0 Bruin run. Another McHenry swing gave UCLA a 24-21 edge and an 'Eater error handed the Bruins the frame at 25-22.  
 
UC Irvine took early leads of 4-5 and 5-6. A couple of UCI errors shifted the Bruins in front 9-7. Back-to-back David swings put UCLA up 11-7. The Anteaters fought back to even the score at 14-each. The score was then tied at points 15, 16 and 17 before UCI put a couple of kills and an ace together for a 17-20 lead. Consecutive kills from McHenry and Sloane helped UCLA rally back into a tie at 22-each. After saving one set point, David delivered UCLA's first two aces of the match to win the set at 26-24.
