Wrestling Downs Cal Poly On Senior Night

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Grant Willits won his 20th bout of the season and Gary Traub extended his win streak to 16 as the Oregon State wrestling team defeated Cal Poly, 21-10, Friday night at Gill Coliseum.
The Beavers recognized their seniors before the match, with starters Traub, Willits, Hunter Willits, Devan Turner and Cory Crooks being honored. Traub capped the night with a 4-1 decision at heavyweight. After starting the season 1-4, he has reeled off 16 straight wins to improve to 17-4 this season.
Grant Willits became the first Beaver to reach the 20-win mark thanks to a 5-3 decision over No. 31 Lawrence Saenz. Willits has a win streak of his own, with Friday night's win pushing it to 13.
Turner improved to 17-5 this season with a 9-3 decision at 133 pounds. He won his 81st career bout, with 30 of those victories coming during duals.
Hunter Willits, meanwhile, picked up the night's lone shutout, doing so over Brawley Lamer at 157 pounds. Willits' 6-0 victory pushed him to 10-5 this season, and 9-4 in bouts decided via decisions. He is also 7-2 in duals this year.
Cal Poly threatened midway through the match when No. 1 Evan Wick won at 165 pounds, trimming the Beavers' lead to 12-7. Mateo Olmos, however, stemmed the comeback with a 3-1 win in sudden victory. The OT victory marked his first in extra time this season. He is 13-7 overall.
Other OSU winners included No. 25 Brandon Kaylor at 125 and Ryan Reyes at 197. Kaylor defeated No. 30 Antonio Lorenzo, 8-4, picking up an extra point via riding time. Kaylor is 16-3 this season, picking up a win Friday night after seeing an 11-match win streak snapped.
Reyes, meanwhile, held on to defeat Trent Tracy at 197 pounds. He snapped a three-match losing streak with his eighth win of the season.
