Cal Posts Season-Bests At Triton Invitational

SAN DIEGO – The second-ranked California men's swimming & diving team posted several season-best times and NCAA "B" cuts as the Bears turned in complete performances across the board at the Triton Invitational on Saturday at Canyonview Aquatic Center.

The Bears won 11 of 12 events and swept the podium spots in 10 against competition from UCSD and CSTE.

Cal started the day strong in the 100-yard backstroke as Daniel Carr posted a season-best time of 45.55 to take the victory. Three more Bear swimmers followed with Kai Crews touching the wall second in 47.67 along with Kyle Millis in third (48.03) and Ziyad Saleem in fourth (48.65).

The Bears put the top seven times on the board in the 50, led by Carr in 21.41 and followed closely by Bryce Mefford (21.77) and Crews (22.30). Millis turned in his best time of the season (22.68) for fourth.

In the breaststroke events, Reece Whitley turned in a time of 24.26 to win the 50, followed closely by Forrest Frazier (24.79) and Jacob Soderlund (25.33).

Jason Louser took the 100 in a season-best 53.20 and Soderlund took second-place with a season-best time and NCAA "B" cut of 53.64. The Bears swept the top seven spots in the event. Tyler Kopp swam 2:02.06 and Preston Niayesh swam his best time of the season (2:06.85) in the 200.

Hugo Gonzalez finished the 100 butterfly in 46.69 to take the win, the second-fastest time by a Bear this season. Gabriel Jett took second in 47.12 and Matthew Jensen placed third with a time of 47.29. Cal swam the six-fastest times in the event.

Bjorn Seeliger swam his fastest time of the season (20.98) in the 50, followed closely by Gonzalez with a season-best of his own (21.27). Dare Rose finished third with a time of 21.53.

Destin Lasco shaved 2.34 seconds off his previous season-fastest time in the 200 freestyle to earn the win and an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:34.97. Cal took the top three spots in the event with Dylan Hawk in second (1:35.80) and Michael Petrides in third (1:38.13).

Cal posted two more season-bests in the 500 with Trenton Julian dropping 6.08 off his previous best to take the win in an NCAA "B" cut of 4.17.42. Chris Jhong shaved 15.65 off his previous best and just missed an NCAA "B" cut to finish second in 4:23.71. The Bears posted the top eight times in the event.

Jensen won the 100 in 43.37 and Hawk finished second with a time of 44.47. Marcos Rico Peng swam his fastest time of the season to finish fourth in 44.85.

Gonzalez earned a win in the 200 individual medley, improving on his season-best with a time of 1:43.04, the second-fastest time by a Bear this season. Tyler Kopp also posted his fastest swim this year to take second in 1:47.46.

The Bears swept the top three spots in the 100 with Carr earning the win in 48.13, Bryce Mefford taking second in 48.32 and Whitley touching the wall third in 49.97.

Cal dives back in Saturday, Feb. 19 at Stanford to close out the Pac-12 dual meet schedule. The meet starts at 12 noon at the Avery Aquatic Center.
