Cardinal Topples Trojans
LOS ANGELES – Stanford men's swimming and diving upset No. 8 USC, 182-118 on Saturday at the Uytengsu Aquatic Center. The win improves the 11th-ranked Cardinal to 6-0 on the season, 4-0 in Pac-12 duals, and is the fourth straight win against a Top-25 opponent.
Stanford took home 11 event titles on the day, including sweeping both relay events against the Trojans (4-2, 2-2 Pac-12).
Andrei Minakov scored 23.5 points to lead the Cardinal, picking up victories in the 50 free (19.58) and 100 fly (46.40). He also swam on Stanford's two winning relay teams to victory, including a 17-hundreths of a second victory over the Trojans in the 200 medley relay to open the meet – 1:25.67 to 1:25.84.
The 200 medley relay team was comprised of Minakov, Leon MacAlister and Ron Polonsky.
Preston Forst picked up wins in the 200 free (1:35.44) and 500 free (4:20.47) and swam the opening leg of Stanford's victorious 400 free relay team to close out the dual. The sophomore was joined by Neel Roy, Luke Maurer and Minakov in the latter event.
The Cardinal swept the 200 IM led by Polonsky's 1:46.01 coming out of the final break. He was followed by Rick Mihm (1:46.65) and Alex Liang (1:49.87). Polonsky also won the 200 back in 1:44.99 and finished third in the 100 breast in 53.98 to swim NCAA B standards in both events.
Liang also won the 200 fly in 1:47.32.
Grant Shoults won the 1000 free in 9:00.21 and was second in the 500 free (4:22.28). Shoults' time in the 1000 free was his fastest of the season. Daniel Roy (1:56.27) and Ethan Dang (1:58.08) went 1-2 in the 200 breast.
In the diving pool, Jack Ryan finished second on the 3-meter with a score of 342.45. Both Ryan and Ethan Foster set season-best marks on the 1-meter with scores of 372.68 and 328.88, respectively.
The Cardinal will close out the regular season on Feb. 19 at home against California in a battle of the Pac-12's last remaining unbeaten teams.
