SEATTLE -- Freshman Anthony Smith and senior Victoria Gersch each entered their names in the Husky 200-meters Top-10 lists for the first time today, running at the WSU Invitational in Spokane, Wash. Smith and Gersch were part of a strong day for a group of Husky sprinters competing on the far side of the state, while a pair of Husky throwers finished up the two-day competition at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb.
Smith had a very busy day, running the 60m prelims and finals, then winning the 200-meter dash, and shortly after that, he raced on the Husky 4x400m relay. In the 60-meters, he had a season-best 6.84 time to place fourth overall. He then won the 200m by nearly three-tenths of a second, in 21.43, going to No. 8 in school history with the fastest time by a Husky since 2017. The Husky men's 4x4, comprised of Jonathan Birchman, Cass Elliott, Smith, and Matthew Wilkinson, ran a season-best 3:13.65.
Gersch took fourth in the women's 200-meters in 24.66, checking in with the new No. 10 time in UW history. She also ran the 400m in 56.55, winning her heat. Danielle Hunter was 11th in the 200m in 24.99.
Aaliyah Wilson got another victory in the 60-meter dash, as she ran 7.41 in the final after a 7.42 in the prelims.
In the men's 400-meters, Cass Elliott was third overall in a season-best of 48.26, and Jonathan Birchman set a new PR in 48.61.
The Husker Invitation in Nebraska saw shot putters Sam Van Peursem and MaKayla Kelby take to the ring. Van Peursem came out with a season-best, as he fired one 60-11 1/4 on his fifth round attempt, his first time over 60-feet this indoor season. Kelby was unable to get a mark in three tries today.
