Card Opponents Foiled Again
EVANSTON, Ill. – Haley Koo won all 13 bouts on Sunday to help the Stanford women's fencers to a 5-1 record on the final day of the two-day NU Winter Duals at Northwestern University.
Koo went a combined 6-0 in foil against Stanford's two ranked opponents – No. 8 Northwestern and No. 14 North Carolina – as the Cardinal split those two matches. But Koo and Madeline Liao, who went 11-2 on Sunday, led Stanford to victories against all six team foil opponents.
The No. 12 Stanford men went 4-1 on Sunday to complete the two-day event at 6-4 and are 10-8 overall this season. The No. 12 women went 6-5 at the event and are 13-7 overall. All of Stanford's team losses at this tournament came against opponents ranked among the top 10.
Three of Koo's victories came over All-Americans. She beat Northwestern's Anna Biasco and Sarah Filby, 5-2 and 5-3, respectively, and edged North Carolina's Sophia Mandour, 4-3. Koo, a sophomore, placed sixth at the NCAA Championships last season. She went 23-5 for the weekend and is 38-10 overall.
Liao also beat Filby, 5-4, as the women's foil team beat North Carolina, 8-1, to lead the Cardinal in that match. Stanford also had the foil edge over Northwestern, 5-4, with Liao claiming two victories. In epee, Irene Yeu went 10-2 on the day.
For the men, Noah Matricciani went 6-0 on the day in saber and 16-2 over the weekend. He is 26-7 this season. Draper Dayton went 7-1 on Sunday in foil and 13-8 over the weekend in his collegiate debut, and Lucas Orts finished 7-2 for a 16-6 weekend record and 35-11 record overall.
Against fellow Mountain Pacific Sports Federation teams over the weekend, the Cardinal men beat Air Force and Incarnate Word, each 15-12. There were no other MPSF matchups among Stanford's men or women's teams.
Next for Stanford is the postseason, with NCAA West Regional and the first MPSF tournament taking place March 12-13 in San Antonio, Texas.
