Four Wildcats Ranked Top 125
Tempe, Ariz. - ITA Collegiate Tennis Division 1 National Rankings were released this morning on Feb. 9, 2022, and four Arizona Wildcats came in at the top 100 singles.
Coming in at the top spot for the Cats is freshman Colton Smith at No. 42. Smith is riding a five-match winning streak with six spring wins so far and 13 overall. He was a Blue-Chip American recruit and is the highest ranked American recruit of head coach Clancy Shields' tenure.
Herman Hoeyeraal, previously ranked in the No. 53 spot, now sits in the No. 56 spot. Hoeyeraal has won five out of seven matches this spring and seven in the fall of 2021. During his freshman season with the Wildcats, Hoeyeraal suffered an injury and played most of his matches in the post-season where he finished 5-1. He helped Arizona get to their first ever Sweet Sixteen tournament.
Right behind Hoeyeraal, sophomore Gustaf Strom landed at No. 58 with four singles wins so far this spring. Strom grabbed his sixth overall win after defeating USD's Gui Osorio in two straight sets 6-2, 7-5. Last season, Strom finished with a team-high of 18 singles wins and earned an invitation to the NCAA Singles Championship. He was also named ITA Southwest Rookie of the Year, Pac-12 Rookie of the Year and First-Team All-Pac-12 in his 2021 season.
Pac-12 Player of the Week Jonas Ziverts snagged the last ranked spot for the Wildcats at No. 73. This comes after the senior captain defeated the then-No. 1 singles player, August Holmgren, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Ziverts sits in the No. 1 singles spot for the Wildcats and has three singles wins in the spring thus far.
The team moved a spot down and is now ranked No. 17 in the ITA rankings. Arizona is off to a fantastic start to their spring season as they look forward to the Blue Gray Tennis Classic and conference play.
