Season-Opening Weekend

BERKELEY -- California softball is set to open the 2022 season this weekend at the Easton Classic with five games over three days at Anderson Family Field in Fullerton, California.           

The Golden Bears start the campaign with a 12 noon first pitch on Friday, Feb. 11 against San Diego and wrap up opening day at 2:30 p.m. vs. Dixie State. Cal starts day two at 11:30 a.m. facing 2021 NCAA Regional finalist Ole Miss, followed by a date with host Cal State Fullerton at 5 p.m. on Feb. 12. The Bears complete opening weekend action at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13 against Colorado State.

  • Cal faces five different teams in the same weekend for the first time since Feb. 2019 at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational.
  • Head coach Chelsea Spencer is set for her second season leading the California softball program after returning to her alma mater in May of 2020. Spencer, an All-American, national champion and four-time Women's College World Series participant in her playing days as a Golden Bear led Cal to a 17-20 (3-11 Pac-12) record in her first year at the helm in a COVID-19 shortened 2021 season.
  • Makena Smith leads the Bears' returnees on the field after three stellar seasons to begin her career. A native of Murrieta, Smith hit .327 with a .573 slugging percentage in 2021 on the way to receiving All-Pac-12 Third Team recognition. Smith led California in hits (36), home runs (8), RBI (23), runs (22) and walks (15). Smith was the only Bear to start every game during the 2021 season.
  • Haylei Archer (Columbus, N.J.) and Sona Halajian (San Anselmo, Calif.) are back in the circle for Cal, along with two newcomers in freshmen Anna Reimers (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Annabel Teperson (Novato, Calif.).
