BERKELEY – One would be hard-pressed to describe a match against the No. 1 team in the country as a reset, but that is exactly the mindset for Cal men's gymnastics going into Sunday, when they travel down to Stanford's Burnham Pavilion for the Big Flip Open at 1:00 p.m. PT.
"The travel meet to Seattle last weekend was good experience," said sophomore Noah Newfeld, "but when we face Stanford, we get to sleep in our own beds and drive over there on the day of the meet. We're trying to re-focus after the trip and get back on track with another good showing on Sunday."
The Bears had their best performance of the season at Stanford two weeks ago, scoring 393.000 points against top competition at the Stanford Open. It leads to some confidence on the Bears' part, knowing that they have that experience at Burnham Pavilion.
"A lot of the California guys grew up competing at Stanford," said senior Caleb Rickard, explaining the team's calm attitude. "We're a lot more comfortable there than we are at other away meets because we go there so often."
This will be the second of Cal's four trips to Stanford this season. The team is scheduled for a tri-meet against Stanford and Air Force on Mar. 5 and will return for the MPSF Championship on Apr. 2.
