Bears Sweep Opening Day In Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. – California softball put up 23 combined runs in two games to open the 2022 season at the Easton Classic with a pair of victories over San Diego and Dixie State on Friday at Anderson Family Field.

The Bears defeated the Toreros 10-3 before taking down the Trailblazers 12-7 to wrap up opening day action. Tatum Anzaldo tallied four hits with five runs scored and Makena Smith added three hits, a home run and three RBI for Cal.

Game 1 – Cal 10, San Diego 3
After not recording a hit through the first two innings, the Cal bats woke up with 11 over the next four frames on the way to 10 runs. The Bears got on the board in the third on a Smith squeeze bunt, scoring Anzaldo. Alexis Bishop followed with a single to load the bases before Smith tagged on a foul out and beat the throw home to make it 3-2, California.  

The Bears tacked on two more when D'Asha Saiki came through on an RBI double to left center scoring Bishop, and Saiki crossed the plate on a wild pitch after moving to third on a groundout making it 5-2 Cal after the top of the third.

San Diego answered with a run in the bottom half, but Cal got homers from Anzaldo, Smith and Bishop in the sixth to make it 10-3.

Anzaldo went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and Bishop also had a 3-for-3 opening game at the plate with three RBI.

Anna Reimers came on in relief for Haylei Archer in the second inning and went the rest of the way in her collegiate debut, allowing just one earned run and one hit in 5 1/3 innings pitched.

Game 2 – Cal 12, Dixie State 7
The Bears got it going early and often scoring five runs on three hits in the first frame. After a bases loaded fielder's choice scored the first run, Sona Halajian laced a 2-run single up the middle to score Diamond Holland and Smith. The final two runs of the inning came on a Kacey Zobac 2-run single of her own plating Saiki and Halajian.

Cal added two more in the third on Olivia Silvestre's first-career hit, a 2-run double to left, bringing around Hope Alley and Amanda Kondo. The Bears made it 12 runs in the fifth behind a leadoff Zobac home run, Smith RBI single and a 2-run Dixie State throwing error.

Sona Halajian earned her first win of the season in the circle, giving up three earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. Annabel Teperson finished the game in her collegiate debut, going 3 1/3 while allowing three earned runs on five hits.

Cal returns to Anderson Family field for two more games on Saturday, Feb. 12. The Bears open with an 11:30 a.m. first pitch against Ole Miss, followed by a 5 p.m. battle with host Cal State Fullerton.
