Cal Drops Season Opener At Navy, 18-10
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Cal got three goals each from both Amanda Morse and transfer Liz Scott in her first game as a Golden Bear but it wasn't enough in an 18-10 non-conference loss to Navy in the season-opener for both teams Friday at Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
Navy scored the first five goals of the game and never trailed. The Bears cut their deficit to three goals on three different occasions in the first half, including 9-6 at the break, but could never get any closer.
Scott scored all three of her goals unassisted including the first Cal tally of the game with 0:49 to go in the opening period. She picked up another with 1:46 to go in the second period and got her first career hat trick with 9:12 remaining in the third.
Morse's hat trick was the third of her career after two last season with all three of her goals also unassisted with 13:21 remaining in the second period, and 13:57 and 5:09 to go in the fourth.
Lily Berger tied a career high and doubled her number of career goals at Cal by picking up a pair of unassisted tallies at 6:13 in the second and 2:01 in the third.
Olivia Dey and Kelly McIntyre also scored for the Bears on assists from Megan Mix and Catherine Roxas with 10:44 and 1:30 remaining in the second period.
The Bears played both Riley Drullinger (30:58, 9 GA, 2 SV) and Alicia Souliotis (29:02, 9 GA, 5 SV) in goal with Souliotis making her Cal debut.
Cal won the draw control battle, 19-13, with Scott and Roxas capturing a game-high-tying five draw controls each. Cal equaled Navy's three successful free position goals on four shots while the Midshipmen had seven tries.
Seven different Navy players scored with Leelee Denton's hat trick leading the way. Kasey Dietzel, Bobbie Haney and Reagan Roelofs had two goals each, while Lola Leone, Christine Fiore and Gil Eby added one apiece.
Cal (0-1) will continue its season-opening two-game road trip with a non-conference game at No. 11/11 Virginia (1-0) on Sunday with first draw scheduled for Noon EST/9 am PST. The Cavaliers were a 20-11 winner Friday at Elon in their first game of 2022.
