PUERTO VALLARTA – The Washington Huskies defeated Long Beach State (8-3) and No. 8 Arkansas (8-0, 6) Friday in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Sami Reynolds doubled and Sarah Willis homered to account for the extra base hits against Long Beach State. Freshman Kinsey Fiedler stole the first base of her career (and the first base of the 2022 Husky season). The Dawgs recorded hits in the first and second innings, but it was the fifth inning where the purple and gold were able to pull away. Madison Huskey and Sarah Willis both singled to left field, driving in three runs collectively. Pat Moore earned the start at the mound, pitching five innings and allowing only two hits. Sarah Willis and Brooke Nelson also saw time at the pitcher position.
Gabbie Plain earned the shutout win against the Razorbacks, collecting seven strikeouts in her season debut. Olivia Johnson continued her hot start, going 2-2 (and being intentionally walked). She homered in the bottom of the sixth to bring in three runs and end the game. Over the weekend's three games, she has three home runs, a triple and two singles, good for a 2.833 slugging %.
SCORING LONG BEACH STATE
1st: Baylee Klingler singled to center field, driving in Sami Reynolds, who led off with a double.
2nd: Sarah Willis homered to center field (2 RBI). She scored Kinsey Fiedler, who was walked and then stole second.
3rd: Madi Huskey sacrifice fly to center field, moving Kelley Lynch to third and scoring Lily Agan.
5th: Huskey singled to left field, again moving Lynch to third and scoring Agan.
5th: Willis singled, driving in two runs and advancing Lynch to second.
6th: Angie Yellen, in her career debut, sent a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Agan.
SCORING ARKANSAS
2nd: Reynolds doubled to left center, Agan advanced to third and Huskey scored.
2nd: Klingler singled to left field, moved to second on the throw, knocking in Reynolds and Agan.
6th: Reynolds singled and scored Jadelyn Allchin. Agan advanced to second.
6th: Agan scored on a wild pitch.
6th: Olivia Johnson homered to left center (3 RBI).
NOTES LONG BEACH STATE
Sarah Willis's home run in the second inning matches her career output for home runs (recording one last year).
Madi Huskey recorded two RBI, and two RBI in the season opener against Lamar Feb. 10.
Angie Yellen made her career debut for the Dawgs, recording a sacrifice fly in the 6th to score Lily Agan.
Kinsey Fiedler stole the first base of the season for the Huskies and of her career.
Pat Moore earned the win - pitching five innings, allowing only two hits and recording three strikeouts.
Brooke Nelson entered in the 7th with three outs to go, and recorded two strikeouts.
Olivia Johnson singled in her first at bat, and was walked in her second.
NOTES ARKANSAS
Gabbie Plain made her first start of the 2022 season, striking out seven, allowing two hits and pitching the full six innings.
Olivia Johnson has had a hit in every at bat in her first three collegiate games. She has three total walks, one intentional (vs. Arkansas) and has not been recorded out. Johnson has homered three times, tripled once and recorded a total of eight RBI and a slugging % of 2.833.
Sami Reynolds hit a double for the second consecutive game. Johnson homered for the second time in three games. Kinsey Fiedler recorded a sacrifice hit.
