SAN DIEGO -- No. 3 UCLA (13-0, 2-0 MPSF) rallied to defeat No. 12 UC San Diego (5-3), 13-6, in the quarterfinals of the Triton Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Triton Pool. UCLA improved to 33-3 all-time in the series history against UCSD.
Sophomore Malia Allen led all scorers with five total points (two goals and three assists). She was joined by freshman Molly Renner and redshirt senior attacker Maddie Musselman, who also finished with two scores against the Tritons.
Redshirt junior Georgia Phillips got the start in the cage and went the distance, registering 12 saves while giving up six goals.
Ciara Franke paced the offense for UCSD, tallying a hat trick.
PERIOD ONE
> UCSD outscored UCLA 2-1 in the opening period.
> The Tritons scored the first two goals of the period (7:13 and 4:00).
> Freshman Molly Renner cut the deficit in half at 2-1 with a goal from the front court (1:05) to end the scoring in the first.
PERIOD TWO
> The Tritons pitched a shutout in the second and added one goal to take a 3-1 lead into the break.
> Ciara Franke scored the only goal of the period (2:54) on a penalty shot for UCSD.
PERIOD THREE
> The Bruins' offense got on track as UCLA won the third quarter, 6-2.
> UCLA scored the first four goals of the third to take a 5-3 lead and never trailed again. Sophomore Anneliese Miller (7:48) and Musselman (7:14) scored in the first minute to tie the game at 3-3.
> Freshman Emma Lineback gave the Bruins their first lead of the game at the 5:37 mark with a counter goal.
> Junior Hannah Palmer scored her first of the game from the front court (4:46) to put UCLA up 5-3.
> After a power play goal by UCSD (3:39), Musselman scored her second on a power play (2:58).
> Freshman Nicole Struss found the back of the net from two meters (1:35) to push the lead to 7-4.
> Grayson Mix ended the scoring in the third (0:19) with a goal for the Tritons as UCLA would take a 7-5 lead into the fourth quarter.
PERIOD FOUR
> UCLA dominated the final period, winning it 6-1, to provide the 13-6 final score.
> Renner opened the scoring in the fourth (7:37) to extend the lead to 8-5.
> Allen (6:20) and senior Bella Wentzel (5:43) would scored back-to-back goals on offensive possessions to push the lead to 10-5.
> After a power play goal by the Tritons (3:56), the Bruins scored the last three goals of the game.
> Junior Brooke Doten (2:58) scored her first and then Allen netter her second (1:43) to push the advantage to 12-6.
> Redshirt freshman Claire Kronen (0:04) scored the first goal of her collegiate career to end the scoring.

The Bruins will take on No. 5 Michigan in the semifinals tomorrow (Feb. 13) at Noon.
