No. 3 UCLA Routs Santa Clara, 20-1

Sydney Chiang tallied a season-high 10 saves today in the win over Santa Clara.

SAN DIEGO -- No. 3 UCLA (12-0, 2-0) jumped right out of the gate, scoring nine goals in the opening period to put Santa Clara (1-2) away on Saturday morning in the opening round of the Triton Invitational with a 20-1 victory. The Bruins improved to 7-0 all-time against the Broncos. It was the fifth time this season that the Bruins have scored 20 or more goals.

The Bruins were led by a pair of freshmen in Emma Lineback and Nicole Struss, each with a hat trick. Junior Layne Anzaldo, redshirt senior Maddie Musselman, redshirt sophomore Alex Peros, and freshman Molly Renner each added a pair of scores for UCLA.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Georgia Phillips got the start in the cage and played the first quarter, registering two saves and an assist while pitching a shutout. Sophomore Sydney Chiang played the final three quarters and tallied a season-high 10 saves while surrendering one goal.

Maddie Clough scored the lone goal for the Broncos.

PERIOD ONE
> UCLA outscored Santa Clara 9-0 in the first period.
> Senior Ava Johnson opened the scoring (7:19) with a goal at two meters.
> The Bruins then scored back-to-back goals from the front court as Lineback (6:40) and junior Abbi Hill (6:02) each scored their first of the game.
> Renner then scored her two goals on consecutive counter attacks (5:36 and 5:12) to make it 5-0.
> Struss scored her first from two meters (4:22) and Musselman scored her first on a counter (3:34) to extend the lead to 7-0.
> Lineback converted a penalty shot (2:34) for her second tally and then Struss added her second from two meters (0:36) to end the scoring in the period.
 
PERIOD TWO
> The Bruins outscored SC 6-1 in the second period.
> Three freshmen each scored a goal in the first half of the second period to help UCLA score the first 12 goals of the game. Lineback completed her hat trick (6:10) on a power play and then Grace Myers had a nice drive and finish (5:14) followed by a third goal from Struss (3:25) from two meters.
> After Santa Clara scored from the front court (2:49), senior Bella Baia scored her first goal of the season in her first game of the year (2:19) on a drive.
> Musselman added her second goal of the game from set (1:20) and then Peros netted her first on a penalty shot (0:36) to end the scoring in the first half.
> UCLA led 15-1 at the break.
 
PERIOD THREE
> The Bruins pitched a shutout in the third period, 2-0.
> Anzaldo scored the only goals of the quarter, finding the back of the net from two meters at 3:59 and 3:19 to give UCLA a 17-1 lead heading into the final frame.

PERIOD FOUR
> UCLA won the fourth quarter 3-0 to provide the 20-1 final score.
> Junior Brooke Doten scored her first of the game (7:01) from the front court to open the scoring in the fourth.
> Junior Hannah Palmer chipped in her first of the game (2:15) from two meters to make it 19-1.
> Peros scored her second of the game (1:13), also from two meters, to end the scoring.

The Bruins now face No. 12 UC San Diego in the quarterfinals of the Triton Invitational today at 3:10 p.m. PT.
