Heck Wins Lamkin Invitational
RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. - Sophomore Rachel Heck captured her seventh career victory on Tuesday at the Lamkin Invitational as Stanford women's golf finished second overall.
Heck's first career victory came on March 2, 2021, just 350 days ago, at the Gunrock Invitational. She is now just two wins shy of Andrea Lee's school record nine victories. Heck's win marked Stanford's fourth individual medalist in five events this season, as freshman Rose Zhang won three times in the fall.
Heck started the day tied for seventh, but her third-round 68 was one of two rounds under par on Tuesday and tied for the best round of the tournament.
"This win was really special," Heck said afterwards. "After not competing for a few months, winning individually was not even on my radar. I really just hoped to have a solid tournament to get the season started. I feel so blessed to have the most supportive teammates, and while we're disappointed to come up just short of the team win, we're more pumped than ever going into the rest of the season!"
After play was suspended due to darkness on Monday night, the Cardinal had to finish the second round and play the third round in cold and rainy conditions. Stanford shot an 11-over 299 during Tuesday's third round to finish the tournament at 12-over. The third-round, 11-over was tied for second-best in the field on Tuesday behind only winner San Jose State, who finished at 9-over for the tournament.
Despite falling short of victory for the first time in five events this season, the No. 1 Cardinal still bested six, Top-20 opponents in the loaded Lamkin Invitational event: No. 4 Oregon, No. 11 Texas, No. 12 Arizona State, No. 15 UCLA, No. 16 USC and No. 17 Ole Miss.
The Cardinal is back in action at the Gunrock Invitational on February 28 and March 1 at Del Paso Country Club.
