Johnson Named National Player of the Week, Plain Tabbed Pac-12 Pitcher

Feb 15, 2022

SEATTLE – In her collegiate debut, Olivia Johnson was named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player of the Week and Pac-12 Freshman of the Week. Gabbie Plain continued cementing her legacy in the UW record books, earning the eighth Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week award of her career.

Johnson started her sensational weekend by reaching base safely in her first 14 plate appearances, going 7-for-7 with three home runs, eight RBI and drawing seven walks (five intentional). This is the best start to a season or career by any Husky. The freshman finished the weekend hitting .700, scoring five runs, slugging 1.800 and smashing three home runs (two in her first two plate appearances). Johnson's three-run home run against No. 8 Arkansas Friday solidified Washington's run-rule victory.

Plain went 2-0 on the weekend, earning wins against No. 8 Arkansas Friday and Rutgers Saturday. She also threw two innings of scoreless work in Washington's second game against No. 8 Arkansas Saturday. The senior recorded 17 strikeouts in 13 innings, allowing only five hits and did not surrender a run.

Washington is back in action this weekend at the St. Pete/Clearwater Invitational where the Dawgs will compete against four teams in the NFCA Coaches Top-25 poll (Tennessee, LSU, Oklahoma State and Clemson). All games will be available on ESPN+.
