Bears Set To Compete At John Burns Intercollegiate

BERKELEY – California men's golf is off to Lihue, Hawaii to compete in its second tournament of the spring, the John Burns Intercollegiate. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will take place at the Ocean Course Hokuala from Feb. 17-19.
 
Here is how the Golden Bears' lineup will look:
1. Aaron Du
2. Sampson Zheng
3. Costas Panay
4. Finigan Tilly
5. Ethan Chung
Individuals: Charlie Berridge and Simon Kwon
 
The Bears have spent the last two weeks preparing since they took 10th-place at the Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson. Sophomore Aaron Du was Cal's top performer, finishing fifth (a career-best) which included a career-low 68 (-4) strokes in the first round. The Beijing, China native collected a team-best 16 birdies over three rounds and his average 2.83 strokes on par 3s was tied for the lowest in the tournament. Through two tournaments this season, Du has a stroke average of 73.0.
 
Also in the lineup for the Bears' upcoming tournament is sophomore Sampson Zheng who produced Cal's second-lowest score in Arizona, tying for 39th with 217 (+1) strokes. Zheng has competed in four events in 2021-22 and currently holds the Bears' lowest stroke average (72.58) after 12 rounds of play. Redshirt sophomore Costas Panay's 72.75 stroke average through four events this season is Cal's second lowest on the team. Panay's best finish so far this year is a tie for 24th at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate. In the tournament, he shot a career-best 65 (-5) strokes in the second round and finished -5 overall.
 
The Bears' lineup closes out with graduate student Finigan Tilly and redshirt freshman Ethan Chung. Freshmen Charlie Berridge and Simon Kwon will compete as individuals. This will be both Tilly's and Chung's fourth tournament this season.
 
This week's event will begin with a shotgun start each day at 8:30 a.m. HT. Live stats can be found here. The men's golf team will look to get back to their winning ways at the John Burns Intercollegiate, having won this tournament five times with consecutive victories from 2011-2015.
