Somers, Churby named to closer watch list

Feb 17, 2022

EUGENE – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released its preseason Stopper of the Year watch list on the eve of the season opener and two Ducks, Kolby Somers and Stone Churby, were among the relief pitchers honored.
Somers, a senior from Hillsboro, Ore. who claimed first-team All-Pac-12 Conference honors and NCBWA All-America honors last season, was dominant closing out games for the Ducks in 2021. The lefty finished the season with a 2-2 record and a 3.08 ERA with 11 saves. He fanned 37 in 26.1 innings pitched while holding opposing hitters to a .149 batting average.
He ranked third in the Pac-12 in saves, as well as ranking sixth all-time in single-season saves at Oregon. His seven saves in conference games were the second most in the league, one behind the leader.
Churby, a junior transfer from Sacramento State, is on the preseason watch list for the nation's top relief pitcher for the second consecutive season. In 2021, Churby got off to a quick start picking up four saves in 10 appearances before suffering a season-season ending injury after striking out 18 batters in just 12.0 inning pitched. Churby finished his career at Sac State with a 3-1 record and a 4.48 ERA and five saves in 58 career appearances. He fanned 98 batters in 80.1 career innings with the Hornets.
