Southern California Sun Next Up for Cougars

THIS WEEK (February 17, 2022): The Washington State Women's Tennis team heads to southern California for matches against UC Santa Barbara and the University of San Diego. The weekend begins Friday when the Cougars face UCSB at 1 p.m., followed by a Saturday match against the Toreros at 10:30 a.m. Both matches will be played at the Arnhold Tennis Center in Santa Barbara. The weekend continues a stretch of eight-straight contests away from Pullman for the Cougars.
SCOUTING UCSB: The Gauchos enter the week with a 2-4 record, though they are coming off a 6-1 win over San Francisco in their last outing.  Three of UCSB's four losses have come to teams ranked in the Top 25. UCSB's doubles team of Shakhnoza Khatamova and Elizaveta Yolodkohas current stand at No. 58 in the national doubles rankings. WSU Leads the all-time series, 7-2, though the Gauchos captured a 4-2 victory last season in San Diego.
SCOUTING SAN DIEGO: The Toreros enter the week with a 4-1 record, coming off a 7-0 victory over Hawaii in their last outing. San Diego has won each of its last three outings without dropping an individual match. USD has two players ranked in the ITA's Top 75 led, led by Solymar Colling at No. 59 and Abigail Desiatnikov at No. 75. The Toreros hold a 9-4 advantage in the all-time series, including a 6-0 win last season in San Diego.
LAST TIME OUT: The Cougars dropped their second-straight match following a 5-2 loss to Minnesota last week in Salt Lake City. Senior Michaela Bayerlova and freshman Maxine Murphy captured singles victories for the Cougars.

  • Following her straight-set win against BYU, fifth-year senior Michaela Bayerlova has 82 career singles victories, five shy of breaking into the school's Top 10.
  • Senior Savanna Ly-Nguyen continues to lead WSU with 13 singles wins this season.
  • At 4-2, freshman Maxine Murphy is tied with Savanna Ly-Nguyen for the most dual-match victories this season.

ROSTER BREAKDOWN: For the 2021-22 season the Cougars will have four new players to accompany the four returners. The returning roster consists of fifth-year senior Michaela Bayerlova, seniors Yang Lee and Savanna Ly-Nguyen, sophomore Fifa Kumhom and freshmen Hania Abouelsaad, Stefaniia Mikhailova, Maxine Murphy and Elyse Tse.
HEAD COACH RAQUEL ATAWO: Raquel Atawo begins her first season as head coach of the Cougars after being named to the position July 2, 2021. Atawo arrived in Pullman having spent last season as the assistant coach at Auburn and prior to that, spent 15 years on the WTA Tour, where she reached at No. 10 world ranking in doubles.
