Men's Basketball Turns Attention Towards Golden Bears for Saturday Contest

Feb 18, 2022

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Utah men's basketball team concludes its final road game of the regular-season this Saturday, Feb. 19, as it battles the California Golden Bears at 4 p.m. (MT) inside Haas Pavilion.
Ted Robinson will have the call alongside Don MacLean as the Runnin' Utes look to grab just their second road sweep against the Bay Area teams since joining the league and first since doing it in 2018-19 on the Pac-12 Networks broadcast.
Since joining the league, the Utes have split its season series against Cal four times (2015-16, 2016-17, 2019-20, 2020-21) and have only been swept by the Golden Bears in their first two years in the Pac-12 (2011-12, 2012-13). Utah looks for its first sweep of Cal in the season-series for the first time since joining the league.
With the win on Thursday over Stanford, Utah snapped a 12-game losing streak in true road game contests that spanned back to last season. Coincidentally, the last road victory for Utah was in the Bay Area swing – a 76-75 victory over Cal on Feb. 11, 2021.
Behind a total team-effort and solid defense down the stretch, Utah picked up its first road victory of the season with a 60-56 win over Stanford on the Farm. The Runnin' Utes held the Cardinal to just one field-goal in the final 9:27 minutes of action with the lone field goal coming with 15 seconds left to play. During that stretch, Stanford was just 1-of-8 from the field and 0-5 from 3-point range with five turnovers while hitting 5-of-6 from the line.
Utah took advantage of Stanford's offensive struggles to go on a 19-7 run during that stretch, including a 12-2 run in the final 5:32, to close in on the Cardinal before Gabe Madsen gave the Runnin' Utes the go-ahead lead (57-54) with 1:42 left to play. Before Madsen's go-ahead 3-pointer, back-to-back defensive efforts by Madsen and Both Gach allowed the Utes to tie the game up at 54-54.
Branden Carlson and Gach each finished with a team-high 13 points while Rollie Worster and Madsen each chipped in with 11 points apiece. Marco Anthony, who flipped a pass to Carlson for the two-handed jam late, pulled down double-digit rebounds for the fourth-consecutive games with 12 boards and five points.
Utah returns home to close out the regular-season with a three-game homestand starting with #3/4 Arizona in the second half of a double-header on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 9 p.m. (MT) on ESPNU after the women's game against Oregon State (5:30 p.m.). That game will also serve as a Military Appreciation Game for both the men and women's teams as they don their customized Under Armour USS Salt Lake City jerseys. The Runnin' Utes will then play host to Arizona State on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 8 p.m. (MT) in another double-header day with the women's team taking on Oregon at 1 p.m.
Utah concludes the regular-season the following week as it welcomes in Colorado for a 7:30 p.m. (MT) contest inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center on ESPNU.
