Women's Tennis Takes on Denver Saturday

FIRST SERVE
The Utah women's tennis will be going head-to-head with Denver on Saturday. This is the fourth straight home match for the Utes. The match will begin at 11 a.m. MT at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.

MATCH DAY PROMOTION
On Friday, Feb. 25, we are giving away a TV when we host BYU. Fans can register at one of the following four tennis matches, Feb. 19, Feb. 20, and Feb. 25, for a chance to win. The winner will be chosen on Friday, Feb. 25. You can only register once per match. 
 
LAST TIME OUT
Utah played Minnesota and won against the undefeated team, 4-0. In doubles, Madison Tattini and Linda Huang defeated the Gopher team, Emilee Duong / Rachel Hanford, 6-1. On court three, Katya Hersh and Lindsay Hung fought it out with the opponents, Ekin Ercetin / Maria Rizzolo, and won, 6-3, clinching the doubles point in the process. 
 
Hung went up against Minnesota player, Ercetin in singles and was able to defeat her, 6-3, 6-2. Goncharova battled it out with opponent Vasia Karvouni. She traded games with the Gopher until she was able to clinch the first set, 7-5, then the second, 6-1. Huang had a truly remarkable match against Rachel Hanford from Minnesota. Huang lost her first set 2-6 but came back to win the following two sets, 6-4, 6-2, and give Utah the Singles point they needed to win the match. 
 
Utah finished the weekend undefeated, 9-0.
 
LAST TIME VS DENVER
Utah last played Denver on Feb. 26, 2021. The Utes lost the match 4-0 against the Pioneers. 
 
SCOUTING DENVER
Denver enters the matchup with the Utes with a 1-4 record on the season. They have played, Pac-12 opponents, Washington and Oregon, to a 4-3 and 4-2 loss. In their last match, they lost to Baylor, 5-2. Last season, the Pioneers won 14 of their 18 matches. Last season, Anna Riedmiller won 14 of her 15 matches. This season, the Pioneers are 13-14 in dual singles matches. Britt Pursell leads the team with three wins, all in No. 3 singles. Denver is 4-10 as a team in doubles this spring. 
 
GONCHAROVA NAMED PAC-12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The conference office announced that Utah's women's tennis player Anastasia Goncharova had been named the Pac-12 Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Wednesday. Goncharova became the first Ute to earn this honor since Taylor Calton claimed this honor during the 2018 season. Goncharova went 2-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles for the week. She improved to 9-0 in singles action and 8-1 in doubles this spring. She earned the clinching point in the Utes win over Washington State to open the week. 
 
TOP TEN RECRUITING CLASS 
The Utah women's tennis team earned a top ten recruiting class for the first time in school history. The Utes earned the ninth-ranked class by the Tennis Recruiting Network. Utah has signed three for next season. Kaila Barksdale, Yasmin Ezzat, and Marcela Lopez have all signed to join the Utes for the 2022-23 season. To find out more about the class, click here
 
TOP AUSTRALIAN PLAYERS
Universal Tennis took a look at the top 10 ranked college players from Australia. The results are based on the UTR Ranking. Utah's Linda Huang came in fourth on the list. Her ranking is 10.23 from the UTR Rating.
