Hassett, Cleverley Called Up To New Zealand National Team

Feb 19, 2022

BERKELEY – Cal alums Betsy Hassett and Daisy Cleverley were named to the New Zealand National Team for the upcoming matches at the She Believes Cup in the United States.

The duo has represented New Zealand for years, with Hassett making her international debut in 2008 and Cleverley debuting in 2014.

"Both Betsy and Daisy were outstanding players during their time at Cal, and it is fun to see them play together in representing New Zealand and their National team," Cal head coach Neil McGuire said.

Hassett has recorded 126 caps and 14 goals while playing for the New Zealand National Team. She has represented the Football Ferns at three Olympics and two World Cups. She helped the team become the first New Zealand squad to make the second round of a major FIFA Tournament when they reached the knockout stage at the 2012 London Olympics.

While in Berkeley, Hassett played in 64 games (50 starts) while recording seven goals, eight assists and 22 total points. The midfielder was twice named All-Pac-12, and twice was a NSCAA Scholar All-American. Hassett also earned a spot on the Pac-12 All-Academic Team three times in her Cal career. The Auckland native played for the Bears from 2009 to 2012.

As a professional, Hassett has played for some of the biggest clubs in the world. She has spent time at Manchester City, Werder Bremen and Ajax. She currently plays for Stjarnan in Iceland's top division.

Cleverley has represented New Zealand at two World Cups and one Olympics, starring for the Ferns at the 2020 Olympic Games. She has notched 16 caps and scored two goals during her senior international career.

Cleverley played for the Bears from 2017-19 as she saw action in 50 contests. The midfielder scored twice as a Bear. She also was twice named to the Pac-12 All-Academic Team and twice was an Academic All-District honoree.

The She Believes Cup is taking place this week in the United States as New Zealand will matchup with the US squad on Sunday as part of the tournament.

The She Believes Cup is part of a movement meant to encourage young females to achieve their dreams, regardless of whether or not they are tied to athletics. In a culture that is heavily influenced by outdated gender norms, SheBelieves is dedicated to female empowerment.
