No. 7 Cal Wins 5-2 At SDSU

Feb 20, 2022
Valentina Ivanov secured Cal's victory in San Diego.

SAN DIEGO – Seventh-ranked California women's tennis returned to outdoor tennis on the West Coast on Sunday, as Valentina Ivanov clinched a 5-2 victory over San Diego State at the Aztec Tennis Center. The Cal junior defeated Nnena Nadozie, 6-2, 6-2, at court-three singles to wrap up the win.

The Golden Bears – who played their previous four matches indoors in the Midwest – improved to 6-3, while SDSU moved to 6-2.

"We're very comfortable playing outside, and it showed today," said Cal head coach Amanda Augustus, whose Bears reached the quarterfinals of the recent ITA National Team Indoor Championship. "It was a good win to get and prepare us for most of the rest of the season, when we'll play a pair of matches almost every weekend."

After a setback on court one, Cal won on the other two courts to take the doubles point. The pair of Jessica Alsola and Hannah Viller Moeller beat SDSU's Regina Pitts and Cécile Morin on court three. The Bears' Erin Richardson and Julia Rosenqvist improved their record to 6-1 when they clinched the point with a 7-6(7) win over Nadozie and Alicia Melosch on court two.

San Diego State tied the match at 1-1 early in singles. But Makenna Thiel – in her first dual-match start – gave the lead back to Cal when she beat Morin, 6-1, 6-0, on court six. The 99th-ranked Viller Moeller added a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Melosch on court five to give Cal a 3-1 lead, and then the 110th-ranked Ivanov won on three to clinch the result at 4-1.

"We mixed around the lineup a bit today," Augustus said. "Makenna had her first dual-match singles win, and I'm proud of her. She's been working very hard and was ready for the opportunity. Seeing her put a point on the board in singles for the Bears was great. It was a good team win overall and should help prepare us very well for tomorrow's match at UCLA."

Cal plays at No. 22 UCLA on Monday at 12 p.m.
