Ducks Tied for First After Round One
LA QUINTA, Calif. – Owen Avrit and Greg Solhaug both shot 1-under rounds of 70 to lead Oregon to the top of the leaderboard following the opening round of The Prestige, played Monday on the Greg Norman Course at PGA West.
The Ducks were tied with No. 18 Vanderbilt at 3-over 287. No. 25 LSU was a shot back at 288, Long Beach State was fourth at 289 and No. 14 Kansas was fifth at 291.
Individually, Avrit and Solhaug were tied for third, one stroke back of co-leaders Reid Davenport of Vanderbilt and Davis Bryant of Colorado State.
How It Happened: Solhaug had six birdies to counter three bogeys and a double bogey. He was 2-over at the turn but played the back nine in 3-under par with three birdies. He was tied for second in the tournament in both par-4 scoring (minus-2) and par-5 scoring (minus-2).
Avrit had four birdies to offset a bogey and a double bogey. He was tied for first in par-3 scoring at 2-under.
Oregon also counted a 1-over 72 from Nate Stember and a 4-over 75 from Eric Doyle. Stember was tied for 18th.
Head coach Casey Martin
"The guys played well today. With the winds being strong in the afternoon, we were fortunate to tee of early. But we took advantage of it. Tomorrow will be a difficult day; expecting strong winds. We are excited for the challenge."
Notable: Monday's round was the 10th round under par out of 16 played this season for Avrit. Stember carded two birdies Monday to give him a team-best 52 for the season.
