Eight Sun Devils Invited to NFL Combine

Feb 21, 2022

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 2022 NFL Scouting Combine is scheduled for March 1-7 and Sun Devil Football will be heavily represented in Indianapolis at the premiere pre-draft showcase.

A total of eight Sun Devils accepted invitations to the NFL Combine, taking place at Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts. The eight representatives will perform physical and mental tests in front of coaches, general managers, and scouts of all 32 professional organizations. Arizona State has the sixth-most invitees in the entire country, trailing only Georgia (14), Alabama (11), Oklahoma (11), Texas A&M (9), and LSU (9).

Linebacker Darien Butler, defensive lineman D.J. Davidson, offensive lineman Kellen Diesch, tight end Curtis Hodges, defensive back Jack Jones, defensive back Chase Lucas, offensive lineman Dohnovan West, and running back Rachaad White get the chance to put their abilities on display in front of a national audience. The Maroon & Gold will send the most players from any Pac-12 school, looking to add to their 254 all-time draft picks.

Under Herm Edwards, the Sun Devils have had a player selected in all three drafts (five total), including two first round picks. When Brandon Aiyuk and N'Keal Harry were drafted in the first round in back-to-back years, ASU joined Oklahoma (Marquise Brown and CeeDee Lamb) as the only programs to have wide receivers drafted in the first round of both the 2019 and 2020 drafts. It was the first time a program had wide receivers go in the first round of back-to-back drafts since Clemson's DeAndre Hopkins and Sammy Watkins in 2013-14. Historically, the Sun Devils and Oklahoma mark just the seventh and eighth times in NFL Draft history that a program has posted first round wide receiver selections in back-to-back drafts, joining Clemson (2013-14), Ohio State (2006-07), Ohio State (1995-96), Colorado (1994-95), USC (1993-94) and Tennessee (1982-84).

This is shaping up to be a very successful draft for Sun Devil Football. Arizona State has the potential to have up to ten players drafted, with defensive lineman Tyler Johnson and defensive back Evan Fields moving up boards during the pre-draft process in addition to the eight combine invitees. The last time ASU had five players drafted in the same year was 2008. You have to go even further back to find the last time eight Sun Devils heard their name called, something the program hasn't accomplished since 1997.

Those drafted will join many familiar faces in the NFL, as Sun Devils were making an impact all over the league. A total of ten Sun Devils spent time in the NFL during the 2021-22 campaign, including Eno Benjamin, Tommy Hudson, Frank Darby, Brandon Aiyuk, and N'Keal Harry, who played under Edwards. The 2022 NFL Draft takes place March 28-30 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
